A Guide To Healthy Fish
1. Most fish in ponds or aquariums become unwell if the water quality becomes poor (95%). Therefore, testing the Ammonia, Nitrite, PH and Nitrate is a pre-requisite for good fish health. Hagen Test Kits are available with 100 tests costing anything from £5 to £7.
2. You need to test your fish water before doing anything else because if the water quality is incorrect no amount of medication or additives will keep your fish healthy!
3. Assuming your water quality has been tested and appears OK then check the fish for Parasites. Some Parasites are large enough to be seen by the naked eye, others are microscopic. If fish scratch against stones or jump out of the water it could mean they have a parasitic infection. The most common is WHITE SPOT which is tiny pin head sized white dots on the fins and body of the fish. If this is the case call into The Fish People for assistance at the earliest opportunity otherwise the problem could spread to your other fish and cause widespread deaths.
4. If Parasites are ruled out the next most likely problem are BACTERIA which cause things like fin-rot, mouth-rot, ulcers etc. If you see anything which looks like an infection on your fish, call into The Fish People to discuss the possible causes and corrective treatment or visit www.waterlife.co.uk for a more detailed diagnosis.
