Keeping pond fish – Winter Management

  • Feed fish only when the pond water temperature is above 8˚C (48F) as fish are unable to digest food below this temperature. Always feed either PHEONIX 2000 Pond food or Pond sticks or any Wheat germ brand you prefer.
  • Keep your pond Filter System running at all times. This will help keep fish healthy and reduce the likelihood of the pond freezing over in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Raise your pond pump onto a shelf or within the top half of the pond water to leave warmer water below for fish to hibernate within.
  • Call into The Fish People Aquatic Centre in Spring to buy a suitable pond medication to kill parasites on your fish before they become a problem. Also, blanket-weed is often a problem form February to June and we have many products which can help prevent or remove the problem for most customers.
  • Pond plants should be cut back and dead leaves removed in Autumn so the pond water becomes less polluted.
  • If you are a customer of ours and need help with any pond problems our helpline is available daily form 10:00a.m to 5:00p.m
